Multi axis machining refers to the machining of a
part with
complex geometry and requires the machine tool
to position and articulate the cutting tool along 3, 4 or 5-axes of motion this is more than the traditional left to right
and up and down motion. The CNC machine tools used in this process are called
5-axis machines or 5-axis machining centers. 5-axis machining is most commonly
used in the aerospace industry to machine airframe components that have draft surfaces,
turbine engine components and impellers.
5 axis machines can also increase efficiency on prismatic parts by allowing multiple
sides of a part to be machined in a single setup.
